Chalkboard Project

chalkboard inspirationHave you seen how many adorable chalkboards there are on pinterest. Above are my inspiration pieces Chalkboards are being used all over, weddings, home décor, holidays… it’s not just for the classroom anymore. As I mentioned in my last post I found an adorable chalk board at JoAnn Fabrics. It is about 20 x 10 and it has a distressed frame.  As soon as I found it I knew I could use it on the dresser to add height and connect the dresser and my grandparent’s mirror.

I had the saying I would put on the board narrowed down to a few and after polling a diverse crowd I settled on a saying. (There is little commitment here because it is a chalkboard and by its nature can be erased and written on again – bliss).  I chose the phrase

“Will you let me be your servant, Let me be has Christ to you”.

It is the words from one of the songs we used at our wedding “The Servant Song”.  A few voters seemed uncomfortable with the word servant. I have to say when I first saw it as a choice for our wedding song I thought that it sounded like false advertising. Servant = don’t want to sign up for that.  But this  really is our loftist goal for our marriage and famil. Being Christ for one another, putting the needs of each other before our own that is what this journey is about.  The next phrase in the song is even more revealing about ourselves… “Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too.”  It certainly is true that sometime it is harder to let go and let someone help you.  It’s a beautiful song.  You can hear it here…

I looked into hiring someone to letter it for me. I don’t mind my own handwriting…but I get sick of it. I decided to try it on my own and see if I could handle looking at it everyday. First I had to have a plan. I typed the phrase on the computer and designed a layout with various fonts.

Then I found the sharpest pencil I could and I started free handing the letters. Looking back, I wish I would have drawn center gridlines so I would have centered the wording better. But it was naptime people – time is of the essence. You never know when your project time is going to be sabotaged.

Once it was all pencil sketched on there I stared at it…for a long time…then I let it sit for a few days. Each day I would look at it for a while – wondering if I should start over. (Can you believe how anal I am…remember this is a chalkboard – it can be erased Ter!)

Finally I traced over it with my liquid chalk marker. You didn’t actually think I was going to use chalk did you?! Chalk?! Those dusty unpredictable, unsharpenable sticks? Nope.

Finally it was complete. It looks pretty good, if I do say so myself. And I love how it looks on the dresser.

Chalkboard – DONE!

Unsettling Our Space – Master Bedroom – Part 2

Believe it or not…this wall and dresser were bare. Ok, that is a lie. Usually there were piles of clothes on the dresser. But I now have styled and decorated area. It was a hard space to work with. It’s a very long wall and I didn’t know where to start…until I was posting photos for my mom’s birthday.

Back in June I was going through our wedding picts to find photos of my mom and me. It was her birthday and I wanted to post the photos of us that were taken at my wedding.

Surrounding the mother and daughter is a mirror. This mirror was donated to our church by my grandparents and placed in our parish’s bride’s room. It was my grandma and grandpa’s and when they moved out of their home no one in the family had a space for it. Well, I now have space.  I first made sure it was ok to un-donated the mirror and donate a replacement. Besides the backdrop of many of my favorite wedding prep photos this mirror plays a large role in my memories of Grandma and Grandpa’s house.Graphic1

My grandparents lived in a beautiful split level home designed by my Grandma. When you walked in the door, the stairs up led to open and sunny hallway landing. Hanging at the top of the stairs was this mirror. This mirror was what I glanced into at each hello and goodbye and I could see there arms wrapped around me. I would love to have this mirror in my home.

Once the mirror was placed by my wonderful husband and Father in law (It’s very heavy), I needed to style the dresser so that the dresser and mirror are “connected”. I needed height and so I bought these beautiful books from “FreeParking” on Etsy and placed a lamp from Target on them. The final piece I picked up was a chalkboard from JoAnn Fabrics.

I’ve seen many chalkboards on Pinterest that I like. There are a lot of beautiful designs and sayings out there. I picked one and finally sketched it onto the board. I’ll write about it soon.

Baked Penne – Pinned & Proven

baked_Penne

Is there anything better than a warm meal that you didn’t have to cook? I didn’t think so. One of our neighbors just had a beautiful baby boy. He is adorable and his parents are so incredibly blessed. They are in the throes of those first few weeks of parenthood but adjusting very well. Their family is from out of state and out of the states (Canada) so while they visited I thought I’d fix up a meal they could pop into the oven and call it done. I can’t imagine being home with a new baby and hosting out of town guests. But they have it under control.

It’s pretty much in the rule books that you don’t try a new recipe for the first time when you are bringing it to someone else. It supposed to be a nice gesture and new recipe can be a complete bomb. But…I live on the edge….

I did taste it before promising a meal and walking it over to their house. I paired it with a bag of salad and loaf of French bread. It’s yummy.

Later in the weekend I cooked it for my family. When Justin was snooping around for the ingredients I cleverly left out that it contained “cream cheese”. It’s on his list of ingredients he can just sense is in a dish even if he can’t taste it.  He loved the dish! And until now….or until he reads this… he won’t know that it contains cream cheese.

**Please note Justin will eat cream cheese if it is in a dessert. J

Along with the Pretty PDF I’ve also included directions in case you want to whip this up for someone in need of a warm meal.

Enjoy

What’s Pinned & Proven?

I love Pinterest…One of my favorite boards to pin on is “recipes” and I’ve even been known to try them from time to time. But are they proven? Some recipes have been pinned and repined by friends and friends of friends and become a Pinterest sensation and none of us have even tried it…it just looks good. So from time to time I’m going to post on a recipe I first pinned and then finally proved pin worthy.

Basil Lime Chicken – Pinned & Proven

basil_lime_chicken

You had me at basil. We have a surplus of basil growing on the deck and I love using it. I searched pinterest specifically for a recipe that would use it. This is a good one.

The night we first try it was one of those nights we didn’t eat dinner as a family. Justin came home from work and needed to mow the lawn right away. I sat the kids down to eat, baths, and bed.  Then I got down to making dinner. I had prepped the chicken in the marinade during “quiet time”.

Sometimes Justin has to try very hard to be excited about a new recipe. He is a RPE (Recovering Picky Eater) and will politely ask for the ingredients over the first few bites. However with this recipe Justin came in from the yard raving of the wonderful smell coming from the grill. We both enjoyed this meal and can’t wait to try it again.

It was a delicious meal. I highly recommend.

Enjoy
